At least the seats were comfortable. The small bridal shop must have been used to its customers who took long periods of time to choose the perfect garments for their special days. Brides worried about everything, and the dress was only the focal point of all of their worries. Everyone would be looking at them, and the dress had to be perfect. Who knew how long it would take for the perfect dress to emerge from the endless racks? Only a few short months remained until the date, and Lily and her maid of honor still did not have their dresses for the event. At this rate, it would be a wonder if they ever had them in time. They had already looked at a few other shops and came out empty handed.
The former Gryffindor had decided to pick Riley’s dress first, mostly because she knew of the resistance her best friend had to the whole idea. She had been ecstatic when Lily had surprised her with the ring and a grin, and even more so when she had asked Miss Wolfe to be her maid of honor, but the gown part would be complicated. Riley did not really wear dresses of any kind, and she really did not wear the tulle numbers Lily had seen in the window for bridesmaids. She did not like the traditional pinks and purples that most brides picked for their party. Part of her wanted to find the first dress Riley liked and go with it, but she could not waste the precious opportunity. She was the bride, after all. One only got to be a bride once (ideally, anyway), and no one would dare to say no to a bride. It was Riley’s job to make sure that Lily walked down the aisle on the special day with as little additional stress as possible.
When she sent Riley into the dressing room, she had selected a few dresses with serious consideration and a few that would never find their way into her wedding photographs. The seamstress had appeared frustrated on her last walk across the floor, but Lily well-knew the effect that Riley could have in situations she found unpleasant on people who were not used to her. She just hoped that Remus’ ever-present secret stash of chocolate had not ruined one of the dresses in Riley’s changing room. Especially not the horrid pink one she had thrown into the pile at the last moment.
Riley’s dress would be hard to find, but Lily thought her own might be impossible. It was her wedding, so of course the expectations of a dress were high. No one wanted to get married in their second-favorite dress. While she could dream about a dress worthy of a princess and a classic dream wedding, the practical part of her mind always chimed in when she made James stop in front of countless bridal window displays. It was her dress, so she had told her fiancé that she wanted to pay for it. It would not matter to most people, but Lily had been determined to keep a wealthy fiancé from thinking he should pay the whole bill. It was her wedding, and she could work for it. She had a job and made decent money. Decent money, however, did not pay for all the ruffles and lace of the dream dresses that were displayed in windows with flowers and hearts around them.
Lily leaned back on the couch and crossed her ankles. She spun the ring on her left hand’s finger, as had become a habit, and hummed a song she had heard on the muggle radio earlier that day. She had dressed comfortably for the day in a pair of jeans that she rolled at the cuffs and a red button down shirt. Her old camera dangled from a strap at her wrist since she had brought it along to document the occasion. She took pictures of almost everything that happened to her, so trying on her potential wedding dress was no exception. Riley would probably threaten to hex her when she started snapping pictures, but it was worth it. She would want to remember days like this.
She was getting married, after all.
It still had not sunk in fully. She, Lily Rose Evans, was actually getting married. She was only nineteen, but that was not what made the whole fact unbelievable. She had a ring on her finger and was getting married. It seemed like a concept that happened to other people. Girls always dreamed about it, yes, but actually going through with it was just… crazy. She was getting married. Who could believe that?
Lily snapped out of her train of thought when she heard Riley move into the room through the curtains. She looked up at her with a grin and crossed her arms over her chest. Riley’s expression clearly showed just what she thought of the dress Lily had given her to try. “I don’t know, Rye,” she answered seriously as she seemed to consider the dress. ”I think it fits you. That skirt? To die for.” Lily stood and pushed one of the numerous small bouquets into Riley’s hands. ”Don’t you see yourself walking down the aisle?” She spun in front of the mirror and aimed her camera quickly to capture the look on her best friend’s face. The seamstress walked by again with a few dresses hung over her arm, and Lily’s eyes followed the white fabric. They still had plenty of shopping to do.
