- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I KNEW YOU YEARS AGO what i was - i don't know- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The school day was finally over, and gratefully Alice fell backwards onto her bed. She stared up at the ceiling with her arms flung wide, her hair a mess and only one foot on the floor, but she didn't particularly care. First days were long, she knew, because that was the one day she really needed to pay attention... In order to learn just how much she could get away with. Take, for instance, her math class. Alice knew from paying full attention this first day that she really didn't have to turn in much homework because the teacher was totally chill and was really into that "teaching yourself" thing. History, on the other hand, was going to be quite a challenge, so there would have to be little day dreaming in that class if she wanted to pass. And Alice wanted to pass. Otherwise she wouldn't be able to graduate.
But it was tough for her to pay attention the entire day because her mind often wandered whether she wanted it to or not. It was a nasty habit her mother told her and she often advised against it, but Alice never bothered listening to such a stuffy comment. She was prone to imagining fantastic things and ridiculous places (though Memory was ridiculous enough). When she wasn't dreaming, however, Alice was curious by nature and honestly she wanted to learn... Just, not always the things teachers wanted to teach her.
She was a curious girl, though. Curious in both senses of the word really, but genuinely inquisitive (if maybe a little slow on the uptake most times). Like now, as she lie on her bed, limbs akimbo and hair askew, her mind wondered at the second name on the front of her dorm door. There were of course two names as there were two students assigned to every dorm room, but Alice hadn't heard this one before. Raymond Nulls. Raymond? She couldn't think of any Raymonds in her grade, and though Memory got new kids to come to school here all the time, Alice had been here for four years and never heard of a Raymond Nulls.
So it was at this opportune time while Alice was imagining just what exactly a Raymond Nulls might look like, that she saw someone peek in the door. "Raymond?" She asked eagerly, sitting up quickly, too quickly, and suddenly she experienced that light-headed dizziness that she wasn't exactly a fan of. Alice collapsed back on to her pillow, clasping a hand to her head but peeking between he fingers. "Are you my new roomie this year?" She continued, a smile wide on her face as she wiggled her fingers at him in a sort of greeting.

Ray was now a junior at this school and his teachers were usually informed ahead of time concerning his family's dark history, so as to not say anything that would set him off. This was easier said than done, however, since Ray is so sensitive and easily offended.
Thus far Ray's favorite class is English as he rather enjoyed learning and reading poetry. He loved words, in fact, he loves words so much that he makes some up, which frustrates most people and confuses them.
Ray had just finished English class and was now on his way to his new room. He was most excited to see just who his new roommate was and for their sake he hoped he or even she liked mad people for he was so...so very mad.
And as Ray walked, Ray could easily hear the cat's words speaking to him in his head. Ray recited the cat's favorite nonsense poem, The Jabberwocky aloud, "Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe..." Up the stairs to frollo hall he walked, his backpack on his back and his dark blonde hair a mess. In fact, his entire appearence was a wreck. He looked like he slept in his clothes, rolled out of bed and just hurried off to school without getting ready. But, in Ray's state of madness, he did not care what others thought of him on the outside. He always believed it is the inside that counts.
Soon Ray made it to the door and already he heard a female's voice asking him if he was the new roommate. Grinning mischieviously, Ray with the snap of his fingers vanished in thin air and then he swung the door open and walked in, his footprints appearing on the floor. A few moments later he reappeared on the empty bed, grinning the cheshire cat's signature grin. He stood on his bed, hand touching the bed's post. "Oh you could say that, but it's simply Ray if you please," he said. Jumping off his bed, he walked slowly over to her. "So you're my new roommate. Allow me to formally introduce myself. Manners and all that," he said carefully. "The name's Ray Nulls. What's yours?" He asked. All the while Ray acted as though it was perfectly normal for people to be able to vanish into thin air only to reappear in another place.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I KNEW YOU YEARS AGO what i was - i don't know- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - People don't... People don't usually vanish into thin air, right? Like, Alice wasn't going crazy? This behavior wasn't normal, right?
It was unbelievable any way you looked at it, and the moment she was able to sit back up, Ray had disappeared with a click of his fingers, and, stunned, she watched the footprints appear on the floor. Her mouth hung open stupidly as she tried to wrap her mind around it, when Ray materialized standing on his bed, all nonchalant and gorgeous to boot. Like, hey, it was no biggie, he did this sort of stuff all time. Man, Alice had met some characters, but this... Wasn't even real.
"Alright, so," she started, her voice giggly with the impossibility of it all, "this is either a bad trip or you really just disappeared and, ha... ha... Well I know a bad trip, and this... you... Ah..." Alice tripped over herself trying to comprehend. Mind racing a million miles an hour, Alice forced herself to stop and think about where she was. This was Memory, at Classic Academy, where people did crazy shit like this all the time. Hell, she knew a couple of kids that could turn into dogs, why was this any different? Why this guy's ability strike closer to home?
She cleared her throat and was just about to start again when he was suddenly looming over her ("Oh!") with a wide smile stretching across his cheeks. Automatically she leaned away from him, supporting her weight on one elbow and keeping her other hand curled protectively in front of her, though she was still giggling (nervously?). "So you're my new roommate. Allow me to formally introduce myself. Manners and all that," he had said carefully. "The name's Ray Nulls. What's yours?"
"D'uhhh, um..." Alice said brilliantly, but eventually she pulled herself together and sat up with a dash more dignity. "Alice," she said simply, smiling brightly at him now. "Day. So, Ray Nulls. D'you normally go around just sort of, y'know," she waved her hand vaguely at the door where he made his incredible entrance, "vanishing like that, or is that a special demonstration just for me?" Her question was short and to the point, as her manners were lacking where Ray's were quite refined. Alice never really was one for proper conversations and pleasantries and all that, much more accustomed as she was to blunt questions. This one, she figured, was nice enough to please him, but got to what was really on her mind.
In the meantime she had taken in his appearance: the scruffy blond hair, the scar, the crazy eyes and smile. Together as a package it was enough to put anyone off, but Alice just found him alarmingly interesting. Not to mention the guy could disappear. Let's not forget about that.

This time it was Ray's turn to giggle. Never before had he witnessed such an odd and yet curious young woman. He couldn't help, but grin that Cheshire Cat's signature smile once more. "Alice eh? I like that very much. You know what, I..." He then stopped himself short and looked her in the eyes, "you may think me mad for saying this, but I feel like I've known you all my life."
At her question he simply grinned at her and said, "allow me to answer that question with another. Can you stand on your head?" And with that he did a headstand. "Fun, isn't it?" He asked. "I so do enjoy standing on my head. Helps me think more clearly with all the blood rushing down to my brain, energizing it," he casually explained. Unlike the cheshire cat, he couldn't literally remove his head except in that cat's form, which he preferred not to do right now. No, no, no reason to flat out let her know who he is just yet. Although, he had a feeling after his grand entrance she had an idea. After all, not too many Disney characters have the ability to disappear and reappear.
"So Alice do you like riddles?" He asked as he continued to stand on his head. "For I am what I is and I is what I am," he muttered nonsensely.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I KNEW YOU YEARS AGO what i was - i don't know- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - And then suddenly Raymond was doing a handstand in the space between their two beds, and Alice decided she had never met a more intriguing person in her entire existence.
"No," she answered simply when he asked if she can stand on her head, "but I can-... hmphm..." And to make her point she flipped over the side of the bed, her head resting on the ground but the rest of her body still clinging to the mattress, her hands flat on the floor. She grinned upside down at him - not the same mad smile that turned his lips so cleverly but an amused, eager smirk nevertheless. They were eye to eye now, Raymond freestanding upside down and Alice supported on her bed (what, she had zero upper body strength!). "Wooo, what a rush!" Alice enthused as the blood started draining from her toes leaving that cold, prickly feeling like her legs had fallen asleep.
There was a bit of a pause in the conversation as Alice adjusted her position to make it more comfortable, and in the brief silence she had a quick second to think about his offhand comment, the one after he had considered her name. "You know what, I... you may think me mad for saying this, but I feel like I've known you all my life." Alice had felt the same way the moment Ray had stepped - or teleported? - into the room. But maybe not exactly that she'd known him for her whole life, rather he felt like a friend from her early childhood. She had the funniest feeling that she met him sometime around her ninth birthday.
Before she had the chance to elaborate on this part of the conversation, Raymond was answering her earlier question in a most amusing fashion. He babbled for a while, asking if she liked riddles ("Oh, I love them!") and continuing with hardly a pause to exclaim that he is what he are and he are what he is. Alice thoroughly enjoyed that and giggled an extremely difficult giggle due to her still balancing on her head. But was that riddle? If so, she'd need to puzzle it out soon or she'd go positively mad!
"That's not much a riddle," said Alice plainly as she slid her body none too gracefully off her mattress and onto the floor. She landed with an unladylike *thunk* but kept her head to the ground, facing him so that they would remain at eye level. "Unless you're talking about... Now let me see." Alice grew very serious then, one finger flying to her mouth as she concentrated. "You are what you... Well you're completely crazy and that's a fact," she said aloud as the pieces came together in her head. "And you're here at Classic so some Disney character's got you. You can vanish, and you left those footprints, and that silly grin of yours-Ohmygosh!"
Alice suddenly stood up very quickly and grabbed a hold of both Ray's ankles, pulling them down gently but then not gently pushing Ray into an upright sitting position. "Iknowwhoyouare! Iknowwhoyouare!" Alice took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down, then grabbed Ray by the shoulders with a huge smile on her face. "I know who you are," she said more slowly, but couldn't help the giggle that escaped her once more.

At Alice's diagnosis, Ray merely nodded in agreement. "Yes, although I am pretty sure I am not the only mad one in this insane asylum of a school filled with Disney characters and such," he said not even denying it and why should he? He knew he was mad and was proud of it!
As soon as she started squeeling about how she claims to know who he was, Ray's eyes widened as he felt her forcing him to a sitting position. During the process, Ray just uttered a mere, "ow." Now that he was sitting across from her, he just grinned. "You do? Then go ahead, tell me! Let it all out," he said, sounding just as excited as she was. "Drum roll," he muttered, grabbing two pencils and now drumming them on the floor in a rhythm like way.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I KNEW YOU YEARS AGO what i was - i don't know- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Alice watched excitedly as Raymond grabbed a couple of pencils and drummed them fast on the ground, as if setting her up for some grand announcement. She sat up straighter and flicked her hair behind her shoulders, all proud of herself as she said carefully:
"You're the Cheshire Cat."
She beamed at him then, her smile splitting her face almost painfully as she waited for his reaction, hopefully his confirmation of the fact. All the signs were there, anyway, so there really was no denying. Besides, Alice in Wonderland was one of her favorite movies as a kid, so she had a good feeling about Ray being the Cheshire Cat. And, like, how completely amazing would it be to have the friggin' Cheshire Cat as a roommate? Pretty friggin' amazing.
"So I'm right, right?" Alice asked, her moment over as she slumped back against her bed, looking at his face expectantly. "I mean the whole disappearing thing was a dead give away. And you're nuts, I mean, let's be honest..." It wasn't meant to be hurtful; in fact, Alice was smiling when she stated matter of factly that Raymond was "nuts", already at ease around her Junior roommate. There was something about him, something really familiar and Alice knew that that feeling had something to do with her own character. Unfortunately she didn't know who her character was yet because, damn it, she was a bit of a "late bloomer". But Alice didn't want to say anything like she knew Ray even though he had something of the same effect to her just moments ago... Maybe she ought to? Maybe he can help her figure out she is?
But first things first! Ray might be the Cheshire Cat!

When Alice answered, Ray just nodded. "That I am," he answered. Then smiling at her he asked in his most pleasant tone, "so now that you know the character living within, might I ask who you are or better yet shall I guess it?"
Standing back up, he walked over to her and looked her over. Smiling, he crossed his arms. "Well, I may not be an expert at such guessing games," he started then he smirked, "well, maybe a little. Well, let's see now. Your name is Alice and you are such a curious young girl. In fact, I'd go as far as to say very curious. You catch my drift?" He said, winking, knowingly. He then looked her in the eye. "You are the Alice, are you not?" He asked in his unusual serious tone. "Why you must be! You are curious just like her and not to mention blunt. And I just met you and yet I feel like we've been friends for a long time now, such a curious thing," he told her, confident. Then smiling he added, "no offense taken my dear. I realize I am quite mad." He then stretched out his arms.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I KNEW YOU YEARS AGO what i was - i don't know- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Alice shouted for joy and clapped her hands together when Ray said, very simply "That I am." She knew it! Of course he was the Cheshire Cat! And she'd get to room with him and all his wild antics... Oh the trouble the two of them would get up to this year, she could just see it! She and Ray were a perfect fit. He was crazy and she was flighty and all and all... Yeah. Things were gonna be good this year.
Smiling in triumph, Alice watched Ray stand up suddenly and grin back at her. His grin was wide and maybe a little devious, and one which she could now recognize as a truly feline smirk. Oh, she'd seen that grin countless times from the Alice in Wonderland movie, and her heart positively soared to see it in real life. But what else could he do? He had the grin and the disappearing act down, but could he turn in to the Cheshire Cat? Alice had a feeling he probably could, after all, people here tended to be able to change into their classic cartoon counterparts. Wondering if she'd be able to get a little demonstration out of him, Alice opened her mouth to ask, but before she had a chance to voice her question Ray was moving about and speaking rather quickly.
Curious, he called her, and blunt. Alice couldn't deny that and shrugged a shoulder coyly at the assessment of her character. But when he grinned that grin at her and said slyly "Catch my drift?", she knew he was on to something. She quickly got up only to plop back down onto her bed, her face now expectant, anticipating Ray's next words. His guess? He knew who she was? If only she knew for certain...
"You are the Alice, are you not?"
She was taken aback for a moment, her eyes wide and wondering. "You know..." Alice said slowly, standing together with Ray and placing a finger to her lips in concentration, "I often wondered that. But as far as I know, no character's awake in my head... I mean I don't hear anyone up in there but me." She admitted the last part almost sadly, like she was missing out on the fun everyone else was having. "But oh," she continued, turning to Ray and wrapping her arms around herself, "how I'd love to be THE Alice! I bet I could be her! I bet I am her!"
Alice searched Ray's face for a moment, considering him. "After all, just like you said, I feel like I've known you since I was very small. That's got to be a connection, I've gotta be Alice! ...How can I wake her up?" Her eyes turned down, disappointed again that she hadn't awakened in all her time in Memory, even with the classes she'd been taken on specifically "Waking Up Your Inner Character". Nothing had... clicked.

Listening patiently to her reaction of his little theory, Ray, smiling, simply nodded at her. Watching her reaction, he was glad to see that she wasn't the least bit offended by his...'accusations' of her character's identity. Sighing in relief, he said, "I am...glad that you think you are the Alice too."
However, what she said next caused him to be taken aback. Retreating to his bed, he just layed down on it, twiddling his thumbs nervously as he stared up at the ceiling. He thought it strange, odd even that Alice seemed to have no idea who her character is yet. After all, he thought everyone who came to Memory knew or at least had some idea of who their character was. After all, why else would she have been given a letter, personally inviting her to Memory if her character was not awake yet or even on the verge of waking up?
After a few moments of quietly laying there, he glanced over at her. "Well Alice did you get a letter telling you to come here? Did it not say who your character was?" He asked and although his words seemed curious, his tone seemed almost accusing. Finally he let out a long sigh. "And I'm afraid I have no idea how to wake your character. That is still assuming you even have one to wake up," he stated, insinuating that maybe the school made a mistake and Alice didn't even have a character to rouse.
Then licking his lips he thought a moment and started to chuckle. "Hmmm...well perhaps, but no what am I even thinking? That is a ridiculous way to test your...Aliceness! Please, just forget I said anything at all," he muttered, knowing full well that her curiousity would spur her to ask him what he had in mind. With this in mind, he tried his best to hide his little devious smirk by rolling over on his side, away from her.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I KNEW YOU YEARS AGO what i was - i don't know- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Hey, watch it, pal!" Alice retorted angrily as Raymond suggested she might not have a character at all. Wouldn't it be her luck to be the freak outcast in this place? She got up and crossed the small gap between their bed to sit down heavily beside him, curling her feet under her and bending close to his ear. "I've got a character, okay?" She said in no quiet tones, her childish, irrational anger getting the better of her like it always did. "And my letter... Well it didn't specify, exactly. But I'll... I'll figure something out! I always do... Eventually." And with help, don't forget, she reminded herself, knowing full well that she always had help from outside sources in solving her own problems. Truth be told, Alice was a very bad problem solver, and had no idea how she would figure this out, despite telling Ray the contrary.
Moments passed in silence as Raymond turned on his side, away from Alice. Alice huffed at this and sat her chin in her hand, scowling at nothing in particular. This was frustrating. Here Ray was, already confident in his own abilities and cool with his character, and all Alice could do was suspect at her own spirit. But suddenly Raymond started chuckling, his back and shoulders shaking against Alice's knee (she was sitting rather close to him as the girl had zero personal boundaries, and even though she'd only just met Ray, she was completely comfortable around him). She turned to look at him but still scowled, as what he was saying wasn't particularly enlightening.
"Hmmm...well perhaps, but no what am I even thinking? That is a ridiculous way to test your...Aliceness! Please, just forget I said anything at all," Ray said between giggles, and Alice perked up. "What, you thought of something? No, c'mon, Ray, tell me," she pleaded, reaching over him to shake his shoulder. "Really, I'll do anything!"

Ray, back still turned at Alice just chuckled softly when Alice got all mad at him for accusing her of not having a character. "Well then if you do have one, where is it?" He asked rather bluntly. "Go on now, if you really do have a character than do something only your character can do. No? Then stop saying you have one when you may not," Ray informed her, exasperated.
Then when she mentioned, finding a way to discover her character later, a soft smile crept across his face and he slowly turned around on his other side to face her. "You are really that confident, are you?" He asked in a matter of fact voice. "Very well, humor me. Tell me of your plans for discovering the character within," he challenged.
Ray chuckled once more when his ploy for getting her interested in his rather zany idea worked. Who would have thought it was going to work so quickly too? After keeping her in suspense a few moments, Ray nodded. Although, he tried not to seem too eager. "Alright, well I do have this one idea, but it is a crazy one just to warn you," he warned before pausing yet again. "First, do you like tea parties? And I don't mean just any tea parties either. No, I am referring to the...less traditional, more fun kind where no one is a stiff," Ray asked the curious young girl.

Alice nearly clawed at him now, her fingers gripping his shoulder while Ray paused before presenting his idea for what was probably all a big tease anyway. Alice's eyes grew positively desperate, though, enthralled as she was by the idea of this guy helping her wake up Alice inside her. She knew she had to be Alice - after all, the commonalities between her and that character were far too numerous to be considered mere coincidences. The fondness for disobeying the rules and exploring on her own, the need to get to the very bottom of things, to day dream, to imagine something better or more bizarre, her fondness for cakes and sugary dainties... The list went on. Not to mention she felt like she and Ray had been part of the same life once, way back when.
Finally, though, as Alice was about ready to result to giving Ray a good smack, he relented and turned to face her. Alice found herself holding her breath while Ray considered her... Breath she released in a loud laugh when he posed his suggestion.
"First, do you like tea parties?"
Alice giggled in the silence that followed his question, her hands flying to cover her mouth, her eyes squeezed shut. "Ray!" she finally managed between breaths, "I'm from Philly! I've never gotten within spitting distance of a tea party," she explained. A smile crept back onto her face at the idea of something so civilized and formal, especially compared to her... Well, her "type of lifestyle." Let's just say she sometimes gets a little help with those day dreams...
But then Ray continued, saying that he didn't mean the stiff, stuffy kind of tea parties at all. "Oh, well I suppose that's another matter entirely..." Alice said vaguely, her voice drifting as she considered what that would entail. Instantly, something like a memory surfaced, coming to the forefront of her mind. It was a scene from a mad tea party, but it wasn't like she was watching a movie. It was like she was actually there, sitting in an overstuffed, red armchair, while all around her was this horrible, screeching sort of singing...
"Well go on, then! Is there another part to your plan?"

With Alice's hands now on his shoulders, Ray grinning the cheshire cat's signature grin, slowly began to vanish. He slunk out of her grasp and reappeared over on her bed to which he stood proudly with a big smile on his face. "Why, my dear you are in luck for I am just full of ideas, ideas of all sorts for us to use to help unlock your inner Alice. They after all don't call me a mad genius for nothing," he told her with a slight bow and a tip of his brown brimmed hat.
He then hopped off her bed and walked back over to her. "Now then my idea is this," he started in his normal voice before he began whispering his plans in her ear. "First we shall find ourselves a fun tea party and then we'll go to it and from there we shall see how you react to it. After all, what better way for us to unlock your Alice than to attend a tea party and a rather insane, chaotic one at that," he whispered before taking a few steps back. Frowning he added, "it is too bad I don't know who the Mad Hatter's host is. He'd be a big help in this." After shaking his head, he turned back to Alice, smiling. "But, I am sure we can unlock Alice without his help or at least try to," he added, optimistic.
He then thought about what she said earlier. "Uh, by the way where is this Philly place anyway and why do they not have any tea parties? So unculturered. Uh no offense meant of course. It's just a place without tea parties must be a sad one," he said, sounding all overly dramatic.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I KNEW YOU YEARS AGO what i was - i don't know- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Alice's shoulder's slumped in spite of herself, her gaze following Ray's progress to the other side of the room. "That's it? Just go to a tea party?" Alice snorted and fell back onto Raymond's pillows, flinging her arms out to either side of her. "Not much of a plan, Ches. B'sides, all Alice does in the movie is freak out at the Hatter and hare and stuff. I'm hardly the freak-out type," she turned and glanced at him, frowning a bit at the corners of her mouth.
"Buuut," she slurred, sitting up slowly only to prop herself up on her elbows. Alice looked at him carefully, coming to the slow conclusion that he must know a bit something more than her, seeing as his spirit's already awakened and all. "guess you'd know better, then..." That got her thinking though. "Yeah, alright. I'll try anything once... But seriously, where are we just going to find a tea party in this place?" Alice laughed and fell onto her back once more.
Then Raymond continued on and mentioned Philly as an uncultured place, which made Alice laugh again. "Oh, no offense taken, for sure," she calmed him, looking up at the ceiling and chuckling. "Philly, that's Philadelphia. Pennsylvania. Y'know, steeped in history and all that... Well, the bits that aren't sketchy as fuck, anyway. Uncultured could be a word for it, yeah," Alice laughed again, but didn't bother to continue, or even ask about Raymond's life. For being as curious as a girl that she was, she never really liked to get particularly close to anyone or know too much about them. Honestly, shallow and selfish as it was, she preferred to imagine her own versions of people's histories; basically, she only saw what she wanted to see in a person. Anything deeper than that, and Alice would disappear from their lives.
Or at least, that's what's happened so far.
"Mphm," she huffed after a while, her mind already elsewhere. "Maybe a tea party's just what I need."
